Edochie gave the advice during an interview on Isbae U’s show, Curiosity Made Me Ask, while reflecting on his nearly six decades of marriage.
The veteran actor stressed that men should not take their traditional role as providers for their families lightly.
Speaking from his personal experience, Edochie said a man who suddenly becomes unable to provide and has to depend on his wife for food, even for a few days, could face humiliation.
He said if his circumstances changed and his wife had to feed him for two or three days, “I would want to take poison” because of the kind of insults he believed would follow.
Edochie’s comments reflect his long-held views on marriage and the traditional expectation that husbands should be providers for their families.
His remarks, however, have also reignited the wider debate over financial responsibilities in modern marriages, where many couples depend on two incomes and, in some cases, wives earn more than their husbands or are the primary breadwinners.
While some may agree with Edochie that men should strive for financial independence and take responsibility for their families, others may argue that there should be no shame in a wife supporting her husband financially when circumstances demand it.
For Edochie, however, his warning is rooted in his personal experience and belief that married men should work towards providing for their families rather than becoming dependent on their wives.
